The Alves de Sousa’s family have been making wines in the Douro for generations, however, it was Domingos Alves de Sousa (3rd generation) who made the important decision to stop selling wines in bulk to the major port blending houses and embark on the road to producing, bottling and marketing wines under their own label. All the family’s wines are made from grapes grown on their six Douro “Quintas” (estates): Gaivosa, Vale da Raposa, Caldas, Estação, Aveleira and Oliveirinha.
From the outset the wines made by Alves de Sousa have received praise for their quality and recognition, winning numerous awards and accolades in wine magazines. Alves de Sousa was distinguished with the "Producer of the Year" award in 1999 and again in 2006 by the Portuguese Wine Magazine becoming the first in the history to receive twice the most coveted and prestigious prize for Portuguese wine producers.
