In March 1999, JEROBOAMS acquired Laytons Wine Merchants, the shipper and retailer of fine wines. Laytons, originally founded in 1934, had built up a reputation both for its innovative approach to buying from the classic wine producing areas of the world, and also the extent and quality of its wholesale business.
The Laytons wholesale business was merged with JEROBOAMS’ traditional strengths in wines from the New World and the three Laytons shops were re-branded as JEROBOAMS. There are now seven JEROBOAMS shops, six in central London and the one in Cirencester. Three of these sell a range of cheeses and fine foods as well as wines, fine wines and champagnes while four are exclusively retail wine merchants.
